In 1926, George Walker suggested a monument be built to mark the beginnings of Nundah. In April of 1938, a century after the First Free Settlers arrived in Nundah, the monument was unveiled by Queensland Governor of the day Sir Leslie Wilson.
The monument is an octagonal shaft of granite, rising from the ground, symbolising the growth of European settlement in Queensland out of the soil of Nundah.
Unfortunately, Mr Walker did not live to see his dream unveiled. He died in 1933, 5 years before his suggestion became a reality. The First Free Settlers Monument is listed on the Queensland Heritage Register.
