Nundah's Memorial Park has been given a new lease of life after being handed back to the Council after the Sandgate Rd tunnel construction.
The Nundah-Northgate RSL Sub Branch have been very active in restoring the captured German field gun from World War 1. Other improvements to the park include a refurbished memorial, landscaping, heritage bollards, concrete pathways and the planting of mature trees.
Tunnel construction
The Nundah Memorial Park was established by the Toombul Shire Council in 1921 to commemorate those who served in World War 1. It developed over time into a much loved regional public asset. In 2000 the park was dug up by the Main Roads Department for the construction of the Sandgate Rd tunnel.
Rededication
On 14th April, His Excellency Major General Peter Arnison AC, CVO Governor of Queensland, rededicated the war memorial at a service that replicated the one held in 1921. Mr Col Swain, President of Nundah-Northgate RSL Sub-branch, said he was very pleased that the Governor, 5 local schools and a very large number of locals could come to the ceremony. "We're planning even more improvements to the memorial in the next few years", he said.
Gun details
The Krupp 105 Field Gun was manufactured in Germany in 1908 and was captured by the 41st Infantry Battalion of the First Australian Imperial Forces in August 1918, in France.
The refurbished gun has been painted in the camouflage colours used during that offensive.
