The Brisbane City Council was formed in 1925 after the amalgamation of 20 former shires and towns. The Northgate Ward consists of the suburbs of Northgate, Virginia, Nundah, Toombul, Banyo, Nudgee, Nudgee Beach, Wavell Heights and part of Kedron.
There are a number of distinct land uses in the Ward, ranging from older historical areas along the train lines (such as Nundah, Northgate and Banyo) and well established residential areas including Wavell Heights, Nudgee and Kedron. There are industrial zones at Banyo and Virginia, retail areas at Toombul and Nundah and coastal wetlands around Nudgee Beach.
Suburb Names:-
KEDRON:- Kedron received its name from the waterway on the southern boundary of the suburb. Kedron Brook was named by the German missionaries who established a settlement at Zion Hill, Nundah in 1838. Kidron Garden (a biblical reference) was how the missionaries described the pristine waterway when they first arrived. Over time, the name 'Kidron' became 'Kedron'.
WAVELL HEIGHTS:- Wavell Heights was named in honour of Sir Archibald Wavell, General Commanding Officer Australia/New Zealand in the Western Desert during World War II. During that war, many soldier camps were located in the Wavell area. The suburb was officially named on 5th August 1941.
NUDGEE (and Nudgee Beach):- It's believed that the name Nudgee, came from the aboriginal (Oondumbi clan) words N'mugi or Na'dah, meaning the 'home of wild ducks'. Black ducks and Wood ducks are still regularly seen in the area.
BANYO:- Banyo is the aboriginal word for 'ridge' or 'small hill' (around Tufnell/Earnshaw Roads). The hill was extensively quarried for the construction of the Eagle Farm Airport by the American Armed Forces during WWII.
NUNDAH:- Aboriginal name for 'chain of waterholes' (Kedron Brook and low lying area near Nundah Historical Cemetery on Hedley Avenue).
NORTHGATE:- The name given to the northern (rail) gateway of Brisbane in the early 1880's.
VIRGINIA:- Name given to the place around the Virginia Brick (later Pipe) Company, founded c1897 (near Virginia Rail Station). The operations closed in the 1970's.
